san fransisco facts

The first mayor changed the town's name in 1848 and San Francisco was born, its 469 residents including Ohlone Indians, Americans, Spanish Californians, Hawaiians, Europeans, South Americans and New Zealanders.
I got that info from:

http://gocalifornia.about.com/od/casfmenu/ss/san-francisco-facts.htmde
The population of San Francisco at the end of 2004 was 744,230 people
San Francisco has the highest number of homeless inhabitants per capita of any major city in the United States
.
Washington Square Park at Columbus & Union is not actually a square because it has five sides. But then North Beach isn't a beach and the statue in the middle of the park is Ben Franklin not George Washington.

For over 150 years, San Francisco has been a magnet for fortune-seekers, immigrants, artists and poets. Guarded by the famous bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the city by the bay is famous for its diverse citizenry, Victorian architecture, iconic San Francisco cable cars and scenic views - and for its fog. San Francisco's summer fog rushes in on ocean breezes as the city's cool air moves toward warmer places inland. San Franciscans make friends with the fog, and when the Coast Guard removed the bay's last foghorn, cries of protest soon brought it back.

  1. that's interesting about the city being founded in 1848. High springs was also founded in the 1840's. That is the only similarity. There is probably only 4000 in high Springs compared to SF 700,000.

  2. Forgot to tell you, High Springs' first name was Orion. It was renamed in 1880's to High Springs.
